The Plateau of Latent Potential is the lag time between what you think should happen and what actually happens. Every student has a goal of becoming a black belt. Most belt promotion applications have this goal written as the answer to what is your goal. This goal is the “result” you want. It takes “time” on average 2 1/2 years to 4 years. Why do some students make it? Why do some students quit? Most students think the will travel the straight line to black belt, but things get in the way. Difficult moves, busy schedules, getting sick, and other obstacles that pop up. If you follow our system laid out for you in the program you can overcome these challenges. Earning the belt stripes is the perfect way to stay on track. What can you do? Come to class. If you attend 2-3 per week you can learn new moves and get help on old ones. Next, practice your moves. If you practice daily you help your mind and muscles memorize the moves. Last, ask for help when you are challenged with a difficult move. We can all become discouraged when we can’t get that one kick or hard one step sparring move down. We will all hit the Valley of Disappointment on the way to black belt. This is when it takes longer than expected. You must be patient and try even harder to work your way through this natural dip in results.
