Overview: Ballroom Dance Lessons
A few weeks before a wedding, somebody books a lesson because the first dance is happening whether they like it or not. That is one entire use of this category, and most studios sell a package built for it. The other is people who want somewhere to dance on a Friday night for the next twenty years.
The styles split in two. Ballroom holds a closed frame and travels around the room: waltz, foxtrot, quickstep and their relatives. Latin is danced apart as often as together, lower and sharper. Nearly every studio teaches both, and a beginner course samples several before you settle on anything. Social dancing and competitive dancesport then go in different directions, with different shoes, different money and very different weekends.
You do not need a partner. Most group classes rotate, which is the only reliable way to learn to lead or follow rather than to memorize one person's habits. Couples who only ever dance with each other tend to stall for that reason. The usual combination is a group class for vocabulary and an occasional private lesson for the things a teacher cannot fix in a crowded room.

Can I come without a partner?
Yes, and a lot of people do. Group classes rotate partners every few minutes, which is normal, is not a social occasion, and is the fastest way to learn. Some studios keep the numbers of leads and follows roughly even, and a few ask you to book ahead for that reason. Ask when you call rather than assuming you will be the odd one out.
What should we learn for a wedding dance?
Bring the song first, because the song decides the dance. A slow track usually becomes a rumba or a simple foxtrot, something bouncier becomes a swing. A good teacher will build a short routine that fits your actual floor, your actual dress and the fact that people will be watching. Book early enough to practice, and tell the teacher if either of you hates the idea.
Do I need proper dance shoes?
Not for a first class. Wear something with a smooth sole that stays on your foot, and leave rubber-soled sneakers at home because they grip and twist your knee on a turn. If you keep going, suede-soled shoes are the single upgrade that changes how you move. Studios will tell you what their floor wants, and some ban outdoor soles entirely.
Group class or private lessons?
Group classes teach you the vocabulary, force you to dance with people who do not know what you meant, and cost far less. Private lessons fix the specific thing that is wrong with your frame or your timing, which a teacher cannot do while running a room. Most people who stick with it do both. Start with the group unless you have a deadline.
What should I ask before signing a program?
What exactly is included, what a showcase or a medal test costs on top, whether lessons expire, whether they transfer if your teacher leaves, and how you cancel. Some chain studios sell long programs through a sales conversation that happens after a cheap first lesson. That is legal and common. Read the agreement, take it home, and do not sign anything in the building on the first visit.
How do children fit into these classes?
Juniors normally have their own classes and partner each other rather than adults. If a studio puts a teenager into an adult rotation, ask why, and ask what supervision is in place.
