A couple of weeks ago Professor Korbett had the honor to participate in his brother’s surprise promotion to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt under Professor Todd Williams. Matthew did not know that his brother flew 2000 miles back to Monroe, Michigan to be a part of this evening. BJJ is one of the most challenging black belts to attain in the martial arts. It’s a long slog, marked by fear, doubt, injuries and frustration and finally an accumulation of skill that is hard to describe. Professor Korbett remembers speaking to Prof Todd Williams about starting his school in the small town where he grew up and started his martial arts training. Monroe Jiu Jitsu is literally two blocks away from where Professor Korbett spent most of my his time 1980s training with Sifu Jim Clark that led him to being live in student/instructor with Sijo James De Mile in the early 1990s. So great that Professor Todd's first black belt is Professor Korbett's brother Matthew! Professor Todd Williams is a legendary athlete representing the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996.
