What is Pilates?

Pilates is a unique form of exercise that uses specialized equipment to build, tone and condition your body. The pushing action against the springs and the pulling action using the ropes allows you to focus and work on different parts of the body, and all the weights are highly adjustable. Pilates can be used as cardio, strength conditioning and/or rehabilitation, depending on the client, the equipment and the weights used. This makes pilates a highly adjustable exercise that can benefit everyone from elite athletes to those recovering from injuries or illness, to all the spectrum of people in between.

How is pilates different from yoga?

Although there are some crossovers with yoga, particularly in the mat work, reformer based pilates is entirely different from yoga as you are using a machine and pushing and pulling against resistance. Therefore because you are secure lying on your back (although there are kneeling and standing exercises incorporated into sessions if appropriate) pilates is accessible for a large part of the population that could never consider yoga- either because of injuries, lack of flexibility, or a desire to incorporate resistance training into their workouts.

How often should I be doing pilates?

This is a question we get asked a lot- and the answer is different for everybody! If you have specific goals and want to make changes to your body then we recommend coming to pilates 3-4 times a week. If you want to maintain and build on what you already have, twice a week could be enough. Once a week is only recommended for people who are also very active outside the pilates studio and are looking to incorporate pilates into what they are already doing.

Why is pilates expensive?

Private pilates session rates are in line with personal trainers at the gym- or at least the good ones! When you do pilates you are working out on specialized equipment with an instructor who has years of experience working with you- all instructors at our studio are certified, some with multiple certifications. We all attend yearly seminars and conferences to learn and keep up with what is happening in the pilates world- we are constantly evolving in our craft as teachers, and our experience and expertise is reflected in our pricing.
