FAQs

What is a beginning class like?

We practice barefoot on mats. Standing postures are emphasized to bring strength to the legs. The teacher explains every posture in a simple and clear way. You will learn proper body position as well as techniques to encourage relaxation.

What do I wear to a yoga class?

Because of the emphasis on alignment, it is helpful if the teacher sees your body (especially your legs and knees). Please wear shorts or exercise leggings and a t-shirt or fitness top. Please do not wear baggy clothes (over-sized t-shirts, baggy pants, or pants that drag the floor). Shorts or fitted pants are more conducive to yoga practice. You will need to be able to see your knees.

If I have problems with my health, can I practice yoga at Evergreen?

A student who pays attention to the teacher and who practices intelligently will not harm, but will often help, a weakened physical condition. If you have a physical problem or medical condition, please inform your teacher before class begins or call ahead, so that the teacher can give you the proper attention.

Do I need to be flexible and strong to come to a yoga class?

Iyengar yoga is for everyone. Your teacher will provide you with instructions and adjustments, using props such as belts and blocks to enable you to work with your stiffness. Gradually flexibility is gained. Strength will be improved over a period of time as students work within their own limitations. Competition is discouraged and students are reminded to remain sensitive to their present state rather than trying to keep up with others.

Will that work in the Iyengar method?

The Iyengar method teaches pranayama as a practice separate from asana. While other methods of yoga may encourage a sounded breath (or ujayii breath) during the asana practice, this way of breathing does not work in an Iyengar yoga class.
