Music Theory is an interesting topic to most drummers. A lot of it's contents are not directly related to drumming. It's certainly worth understanding from a musical standpoint, but we tend to put more emphasis on the concepts within Music Theory that relate to rhythm and notation, more so than the ones that relate to melody and chord progressions. While it's debatable as to whether or not that is actually detrimental to a drummer's growth as a musician, at very least, it's important that you find ways to apply those theoretical elements. As a novice drummer looking to get into the instrument, Jon went through rudiments, basic beats and concepts and provided instruction and practice plans between our lessons.
He not only focuses on learning some song beats, but he drills the fundamentals.
Most importantly, his love of drumming has increased so much that we no longer need to urge him to practice.
Jon's ability to personalize lessons and engage on so many different levels has made my lessons with him an awesome experience.
I wanted to learn jazz music, and so our lessons started with basic jazz beats and focused on musicality and establishing cooridination.
