10/16 - 11/20 (6 sessions) Mondays 11:00-12:00 p.m. This interactive workshop series covers the first set of 12 postures in the method developed by Dr. Loren Fishman M.D. Students will work to improve bone health and learn the details of postures, so that they can establish or enrich their own home practice. Specific attention will be given to the spine and hips, where the risk of fracture is greatest. In addition to learning the technical aspects of the postures, students will also work toward gaining more strength, flexibility, and balance, which will improve their overall range of motion. Simple breath work will be incorporated to teach proper hold times and regulate the nervous system. Yoga for Bone Health is a targeted practice developed by Dr. Loren Fishman, MD. It is designed to maintain a healthy skeleton, strengthen posture, and improve balance. This unique set of twenty-four poses was practiced by individuals with osteoporosis in a specialized study. Upon completion, data showed that consistent practice reversed the effects of osteoporosis/osteopenia in the spine and hips. Dr. Fishman's research was featured in The New York Times, and drew public awareness to the potential application of yoga for improving bone condition. Dr. Fishman continues to train yoga instructors in his specialized method, in addition to studying new postures and conducting long-term studies. This workshop is open to all levels, regardless of ability, age or medical condition.
