FAQs
Why Iyengar Yoga?
This method emphasizes correct body alignment in all the yoga postures. All bodies are different, and the Iyengar teachers are trained to teach each individual student how to adjust the postures to suit each individual person.
What is the difference between Iyengar yoga and other styles of yoga?
Iyengar yoga is very practical. You will develop strength, endurance, flexibility and relaxation by paying close attention to body alignment in each asana. We emphasize standing poses to build strong legs, improve circulation, increase vitality, and improve coordination and balance. Meditation occurs as the practitioner becomes absorbed in the moment through attention to postural alignment and breath movement. As the mind, body and breath unite, the practitioner moves into a meditative state. The practice leads to self-exploration and one becomes aware of physical tension patterns and psychological resistance. Through regular practice the student's inner awareness is enhanced and the ability to relax and concentrate is improved. In Iyengar yoga, candle gazing, incense burning, or music, often associated with yoga, are not used.
How do I know what level class is right for me?
Everyone who is new to Evergreen Yoga or the Iyengar method, should start with Introductory or Level 1 classes. The Intro classes are similar to Level 1 classes, but move at a more gentle pace. If you are a brand-new student and can sit, stand, walk, and get up from the floor easily, you can start at Level 1. For Level 2 classes, you need to have developed a strong foundation in the Level 1 classes. You will be expected to understand the vocabulary of the Iyengar method. You should also be able to do sirsasana (headstand) and sarvangasana (shoulderstand) in order to participate. (If you cannot practice headstand and shoulderstand due to a physical condition, speak to the teacher; she will give you alternate postures that fit your needs.)
