Last year, we named it ‘Beyond the Darkness’ as Covid-19 rampaged the globe. We prayed for the dark clouds to disperse; for the Sunlight to shine through. Our 2021 recital will be an Invocation to relieve those suffering a particularly dire situation in India. In this unimaginable tragedy our own Guru ji, whose life epitomized dedication to Sangeet, fell victim. Our recital will be a tribute to his legacy. Each year, for the past 15+ years, Swarlahari School has brought high-quality Hindustani singing recitals, presented in venues like the Garland Plaza Theater and the Plano Courtyard Theater as part of our mission to develop love for this artful, heritage music in the local community. In 2020 as the pandemic set in, our recital venue bookings had to be cancelled. We then experimented with online meeting platform to conduct the recital successfully. The presentations had to change from groups to individuals, the accompanying music had to go digital, and the students needed to control their own electronic drone and beat instruments, without support from the teacher during their performances. They adjusted surprisingly well. Once again, we are set to present the talented students of Indian classical singing in our online recital in the next week. The fervor is high, the practices are in full swing, the students are busy mastering bandishes, bhajans & other compositions. We see a silver-lining on the clouds that promises to have our recitals back in the theater next year.
