Phenomenal job by the SBG East Coast team yesterday at Grappling Industries! ⁣n⁣nIn the youth division we had just one competitor, Grayson Matton, who was moved up to a higher weight class and won a silver medal, including 2 submissions.⁣n⁣nThen Tim Connelly started things off in the adult division, winning gold in the gi competing as a purple belt for the first time (including some highlight reel submissions), as well as a silver in no gi. ⁣n⁣nElijah Smith went on a tear competing in the no gi division for the first time as a blue belt, winning 6 of his 7 matches in dominant fashion, mostly by submission, and taking home a silver medal.⁣n⁣nMarc Anthony Cardoso looked dominant in his division (no gi), landing multiple submissions on his way to winning gold. His performance was just the exclamation point on an incredible personal transformation arc over the last 6 months in terms of both skill and confidence.⁣n⁣nMike Hyland won bronze (no gi), demonstrating excellent clinch & takedowns on the feet and positional control on the mat.⁣n⁣nKyle Entwistle didn’t make the podium but was another example of a student making exceptional progress in their skills over a period of months. ⁣n⁣nAnd last but not least, this was Tim Liffers’ first tournament, and he had a textbook performance and win in his first match, lost his second, then unfortunately was knocked out of medal contention by one of his own teammates who he watch matched against. Great work for his first time competing.⁣n⁣nIcing on the cake for the day: I had the opportunity to award my longtime student and friend, Jeff Perez, his first degree stripe on his black belt. Jeff was there coaching his team at Back 2 Basics, where he’s build a killer team and leads a great group of people.⁣n⁣nFinally, big thanks to Coach John Murphy and Coach Mal Luz for their help coaching yesterday, Coach Tim for his fantastic job with the comp team, and to Autumn Alexandria and Mike Matton for hanging out all day long and supporting!
