To see the extreme fear in a Mustang's eyes, when it doesn't understand you are desensitizing it to scary objects and teaching it to be calm, is just heartbreaking sometimes. Horses don't like things that move and make a noise, and something so simple as a grain bag or plastic bag can set any horse over the edge. This is the difference between active body language and passive body language and knowing when to release at the right time to teach your horse to relax. Many people understand pressure. But they don't understand releasing pressure at the right time which actually teaches the horse what you want. Sometimes that means just finding neutral ground somewhere, which means maybe just seeing the plastic grain bag move up and down ever so slightly as you wait and watch for one of the signs of relaxation which signals immediate release of whatever you are doing. I prefer to desensitize my horses as much on the ground as possible before ever getting in the saddle. It keeps me safe. And if you can teach a horse on the ground first, it will be a lot easier to teach in the saddle later.
