Overview: Spin Classes
The room is dark, the music is loud, and everyone else is already clipped in while you are still hunting for your bike number. Indoor cycling packs a lot of work into a short class, and nearly all the misery of a first session comes from things you could have fixed before the lights went down.
Arrive early and have somebody set the bike up for you. Saddle height, saddle position and handlebar height decide whether you leave with tired legs or with a sore back and numb hands. Staff will do it in a couple of minutes if you ask, and nobody across the room can tell that you have never done this.
The resistance knob runs on the honor system. The instructor calls out cadence and effort, and you are the only person who knows whether you actually turned the dial. That is the freedom in the format and also the trap, because spinning light while the playlist does the emotional work feels like a workout without being one.
Boutique studios usually have clip-in pedals and lend shoes; gym classes tend to have cages that take sneakers. Bring water and a towel. Use the state and city lists to reach the studios near you, and check the timetable on a city page before you drive over.

How early should I turn up?
Early enough to have your bike fitted and to be on it before the class starts, which usually means turning up well ahead of the hour for a first visit. Studios often lock the door once the music starts. Tell reception you are new, because that is the difference between somebody setting your saddle and you guessing.
Do I need cycling shoes?
Not to begin with. Boutique studios lend clip-in shoes with the class, and gym bikes usually have cages that hold a sneaker. Clipping in does make you steadier and lets you pull as well as push. Buy your own only once you know you are going regularly, and check which cleat system the studio uses before you do.
What do instructors mean by cadence?
How fast your legs are turning, as opposed to how hard they are working. A heavy gear at a slow turn feels like climbing; a light gear at a fast turn feels like a sprint. Good instructors ask for both together and tell you what each one should feel like. If a class only ever asks for faster, the resistance knob is doing nothing.
Studio class or the one at my gym?
A gym class comes with the membership, the bikes are whatever the gym bought, and the instructor changes. A studio charges per class or by package, holds bikes you reserve by number, and builds the room around sound and lighting. Neither teaches better cycling by default. Pick on the instructor and the time of day, not the fittings.
What if I hate loud music and darkness?
Then say so before you book, because volume and lighting vary enormously and neither shows up on a timetable. Gym classes tend to keep the lights on. Some studios run a quieter daytime class. Ear plugs are common and nobody will comment. If flashing lights are a medical issue for you, tell the studio rather than finding out mid-class.
Can teenagers take these classes?
Most studios set a minimum age and many will not take anyone under it even with a parent on the next bike. Where junior classes exist, ask who supervises the room and what screening staff go through, since requirements for working with minors are set state by state. Ask about the bike too, because standard frames do not fit small riders.
