Responding with thoughts on the recent article featured in the Buffalo, ART/WNY Executive Director Matthew LaChiusa reached out to Buffalo News Gusto Editor, Toni Ruberto, and after a two-hour phone conversation Matthew gained insight into why the paper no longer previews or reviews local theater productions. Additionally in the phone conversation, Ms. Ruberto requested input into how the Buffalo News can feature local theaters to which Mr. LaChiusa offered 5 suggestions to her. Due to word limitations in posting the story continues in the comments. nnAccording to Ms. Ruberto, one of the major reasons the Buffalo News has reduced local theater coverage is a direct result of the newspaper’s owner, Lee Enterprises, downsized staff members that cover the local Cultural scene. Ms. Ruberto pointed out that there have been industry changes over the past ten years that effected readership, yet the paper managed to keep the coverage flowing 6 years ago until the Buffalo News reduced full-time writers and relied on free-lance reviewers. Eventually, these positions were also phased away due to budgetary cuts by Lee Enterprises, eliminating coverage, leaving Ms. Ruberto only to maintain basic coverage of the theatre scene as well as other cultural events. nnStressing the difficulties of covering the “over-abundance” of theater companies even with a full staff of writers, Ms. Ruberto pointed out that being reduced to just herself even further complicated coverage of the local scene. nnDespite these difficulties, she said that companies can still send upcoming productions information to her email to be listed in the Buffalo News’ subscriber’s newsletter, the paper’s online “Things to Do” section, page #2 of The Gusto every week. She requests that theaters submit their press-release and photos at least two weeks prior to the show’s opening.
