Hey bass players! When do I need to change my strings? These are the strings I’ve been using on my basses for the past few years. Elixir (coated) is a brand that makes coated strings which preserves the brightness for a long, long time - if you like that. Ernie Ball (un-coated) strings are regular un-coated bass strings that a lot of players like. When do I need to change my strings? It really comes down to personal preference. When using un-coated strings, you may notice your bass starts to sound dull after a few months of playing. This happened to me many times as a young player in the 90's. I always found old, dull strings uninspiring and went to great lengths to try and brighten them up including boiling them (a trick I believe EVH used?). If you like a brighter, more brilliant bass sound, like I do, I recommend spending the extra $$ and trying a set of the Elixir strings. They really maintain that “new-string” sound for 6-12 months! If you like a more dead, dark sound, then you never have to change your strings unless one breaks :) Happy playing!
