Today we take a moment to thank and celebrate our teacher, Cathy De Wald. “Ms. Cathy” begin teaching at Kid Art in 1997 - that’s 25 years of service to our students and community! In a recent interview, Cathy shared some of her favorite things about teaching. Topping the list: Spending quality time with the kids, teaching them basic art skills then watching them progress from simple shapes to painting techniques and assembling clay sculptures. “I love their ideas, jokes, music choices, and watching them interact and make new friends.” When asked what she has learned from the kids over the years, she said, “The students have taught me how resilient children can be, especially during historical tragedies and most recently the pandemic.” An avid artist herself with a minor in art history, Cathy creates daily, usually at the request of friends and family. She finds inspiration from her own personal influences, including Matisse, Van Gogh, Monet, Frida Kahlo, Bonnard, Gaugin, Maxfield Parrish, David Bates, and many more. “I love that we teach art history at Kid Art... one of my favorite movies is Midnight in Paris, because it gives us a glimpse into such great periods of art.” While not at Kid Art, Cathy enjoys playing tennis and pickleball and looks forward to traveling again. “I love water and beaches, swimming, walking, hiking, and animals.” Something you may not know about Cathy, she has illustrated two children’s books pending publication.
