We believe, and reinforce, the samurai maxim that "true victory is victory over oneself," and feel that the study of traditional karate is really a study of the self. When a student steps onto the mat for the first time he or she has already identified a desire to change something about himself or herself. The same applies to someone who has been training for years. The term shoshin means "beginner's mind," and we believe that every training session is an opportunity to learn something new about ourselves – whether we have been training for one day or thirty years.
