You want to look lean and have more muscle definition. You’re going to need to get stronger. But how do you know when to lift heavier? Here’s a easy to follow rule that’ll get you lifting heavier and seeing changes to your physique. The 2 for 2 rule. If you can perform two or more repetitions over your assigned repetition goal in the last set in 2 consecutive workouts for a given exercise, add weight. How much to add? Go up 5-10 pounds for upper body and 10-20 pounds for lower body exercises for the next training session. Here’s an example: Let’s say you can normally squat 100lbs for 10 reps but pushed yourself and managed to complete 12 reps on the last set for 2 consecutive workouts. You should be squatting 110-120 pounds. Improvements to your strength, means improvements to your physique.
