After much research, I just got a new helmet. I ended up purchasing the Tuff Rider Carbon Fiber helmet. I looked at the Virginia Tech Helmet Safety Lab results done by researchers from the Department of Biomechanical Engineering and Mechanics. Having worked in Neurorehab, Neuro trauma and Concussion Clinics I have an understanding of types of Traumatic Brain injuries (Concussion, second impact syndrome, post concussion syndrome, Coup-contrecoup where the injury is opposite the point of impact due to brain bounce, and diffuse axonal injury from tearing or shearing of neurons) and was looking for a helmet with the ability to reduce injury from a broad range of impacts that a rider might experience. I looked at the helmet's ability to reduce both linear and rotational head trauma injury. My research also revealed that many helmets constructed to protect against high level impact were actually too stiff and did not help prevent concussion in low impact.nNot all helmets are created equal. Many popular models that look good give little protection and may be giving the rider a false sense of security. Of 39 models evaluated by the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab, two models received the top score of 5 stars.
