Salsa is a dance form with origins from the Cuban Son (circa 1920s) and Afro-Cuban dance (specifically Afro-Cuban Rumba (dance). It is commonly associated with the salsa music style. The modern dance from New York was popularized in the 1980s by Eddie Torres, who was a 2nd generation New York Puerto Ricans.
